In an unprecedented achievement with high efficiency and in record time, the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (Ethydco) succeeded in conducting the first major Turnaround at the ethylene plant after a period of continuous and uninterrupted production for 6 years. The major Turnaround works began on October 9 and continued until the 29th of the same month. During the Turnaround works, those in charge were keen to ensure the highest rates of occupational health and safety and to complete the work with the highest quality and in the fastest possible time. This is due to the company's keenness to restart the production process at the plant, which has an estimated production capacity of 460 thousand tons/year.
The major Turnaround works come in implementation of the strategic plan of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, in which maintenance operations receive great attention as the cornerstone of an important industry such as the petrochemical industry, in order to develop the petroleum system and work to achieve sustainability, raise the efficiency of assets and equipment, and focus on quality and diversity and increase value. The addition and providing a safe and pollution-free work environment The Turnaround work in the ethylene plant at Ethydco included some critical equipment such as dryers, compressors, turbines, a sudden cooling tower, cranes, maintenance work lines, steam traps, valve calibration and other pre-planned work.

For his part, the managers and implementers of the Turnaround works at Ethydco expressed their thanks and appreciation for the unlimited support and accurate follow-up, moment by moment, of all the major Turnaround works on the part of the company’s chairman and his keenness to provide all the equipment and capabilities for the success of this first Turnaround in the company’s history. Good planning and preparation for the various Turnaround works were the key to success, which began in coordination with sister companies and concerned parties, as coordination came with the Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), the Egyptian Gas Holding Company (EGAS), Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals Company (Sidpec) and Gasco regarding the appropriate timing for starting the planned Turnaround works and ensuring the preservation of the availability of polyethylene in the local market.
The coordination steps were in conjunction with the issuance and approval of the Turnaround project document and the preparation of the project schedule, starting from the preparation period and providing equipment and supplies until the return of all units to production, with strict adherence to occupational safety and health requirements and the application and implementation of all the procedures related to this and in effect within the company, especially Precautionary measures for the Corona virus and providing a medical team with all the supplies around the clock. The organizers and implementers also expressed their pride in this achievement and added that the purpose of the first major Turnaround work in the ethylene plant comes within the framework of raising operational efficiency and reliability in the company's factories and working to raise the standards of efficiency and safety in the Ethydco complex which is considered the largest of its kind in the region and the African continent. At the same time, we seek through this Turnaround to reduce unplanned operational downtime and increase the flow and smooth flow of the operational process, which is a key element in achieving our production goals by ensuring that the company's factories continue to operate at their maximum capacity in order to maintain the planned production levels currently and in the future. It is worth mentioning that Ethydco was able to save 50 million Egyptian pounds by completing the work in a record time through the optimal and most effective use of human resources and equipment used, in addition to relying on and giving priority to local supply of tasks instead of importing from abroad. Approximately 45 heavy equipment were used in the Turnaround works and approximately fifteen thousand meters of scaffolding were used to implement the works in which approximately one thousand and a quarter hundred workers from various companies participated, including the sons of Ethydco and petroleum sector companies specialized in maintenance work for Alexandria Petroleum Maintenance Company (Petrominnt) and San Misr to implement project work. Among the participating parties are Mitsubishi to participate in compressor and turbine work, as well as Inspecta and United companies for engineering inspection work, as well as Trust for civil works, and Absco and Care Service for insurance work.
