Within the framework of the strategy of the petroleum and mineral resources sector, considering safety as a fundamental pillar of petroleum work, and in light of the directives of His Excellency the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi, on the importance of follow-up and field tours in all work and production sites in petroleum companies, a delegation including a number of petroleum leaders headed by Chemist Gamal Fathy, Advisor to His Excellency the Minister for Occupational Health, and Environmental Protection Accompanied by Chemist / Salah Riad, Assistant Chairman of the Petrochemicals Holding Company for Occupational Health , Safety and Environmental Protection, and the participation of Dr. / Khaled Ismail and Dr. / Mohamed Abu Shousha from the Ministry, made an inspection visit to the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO). During the tour, Chemist / Hesham Riad, Chairman and Managing Director, presented the company's activities and various projects to support and develop the safety and Process safety systems, in addition to implementing environmental compatibility projects and projects to improve and rationalize energy consumption. He stressed the company's commitment to implementing occupational Health , safety rules and environmental protection as a first priority for safe operation, increasing production, attracting investments and business sustainability, which had positive effects on improving performance efficiency, safety and process Safety indicators.
Within the framework of the digital transformation strategy in the petroleum sector, the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) has implemented new projects that include the application of the electronic permit to Work system, and the application of the Action Tracker to track safety, process safety and other digital systems to increase efficiency, improve performance and safe operation.
Chemist Hani Tawfik, General Manager of Safety at the company, gave a presentation on the company’s current activities and projects in safety and Process safety to be in line with the vision of the Ministry of Petroleum and the procedures issued by it in this field, as the company is currently taking measures to re-evaluate the performance of the safety and Process safety system, which was previously evaluated during the years 2020/2021 by the DNV.
The evaluation resulted with obtaining the company a performance certificate with a high score of level 6 as the first Egyptian company. It is worth noting that the re-evaluation will be done at a higher level, which is level 7-8, in order to achieve the management’s vision and the company’s policy for continuous development.
The company also completed the safety Case project in cooperation with TUV Rheinland. Work is underway to implement the study’s recommendations and integrate its outputs into the company’s various systems.
The risk register has also been updated. The company's risk register according to the outcomes of the safety case study to support the risk management system, which has been activated in the company since 2022 in implementation of the Ministry's standard Risk Management ST-001. The risk register is being updated to include all types of risks specific to the company in order to achieve the concept of corporate risk management under the directives of Chemist Hesham Riad.
Then, the delegation of the Ministry of Petroleum made a field visit to the company's sites and inspected the ethylene plant. Chemist Mahmoud Shamis explained the operational process of the plant, the electronic permit to Work system, and the company's mechanisms for complying with the requirements of treating industrial waste, discharging and monitoring gas emissions, and various environmental measurements. At the end of the tour, the Advisor to His Excellency the Minister for Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection praised the level of development and modernization carried out by the company for all systems and the high level of workers' culture towards safety and Process safety. He urged them to continue working hard and commit to safe operation by following all the rules of occupational health, safety, and environmental protection.
