  • ETHYDCO Becomes the First Egyptian Petrochemical Company to Implement Scope 3 Carbon Footprint Assessment in Line with Ministry Strategy

    Sun, 13-Jul-2025

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability under Pillar Five of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy, the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) has successfully completed a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment covering all its operational activities. This was conducted by the company’s General Department for Environmental Protection in collaboration with Petrosafe and Integral, making ETHYDCO the first petrochemical company in Egypt to implement greenhouse gas emissions measurement across all three scopes (Scope 1, 2, and 3). The study underwent third-party verification by the Environmental Performance Unit at the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) and received international accreditation through the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC), representing a model of technical integration and institutional coordination among national bodies to support global environmental objectives.

This achievement reflects ETHYDCO’s ambitious vision and firm commitment to the highest standards of environmental performance and minimizing the negative impacts of production activities. It aligns with the goals of sustainable development, Egypt Vision 2030, and the objectives of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The carbon footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted directly and indirectly due to industrial activities, categorized into three scopes:

    • Scope 1:Direct emissions from sources controlled or owned by the facility, such as combustion or material leaks.
    • Scope 2:Indirect emissions from the consumption of purchased electricity.
    • Scope 3:Other indirect emissions across the supply chain, including transportation, business travel, product usage after leaving the facility, and waste management.

ETHYDCO placed special emphasis on implementing Scope 3 and committed to transparency and accuracy in data collection, having prepared and developed a robust data management system for all three scopes over several years.

The study was conducted in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and the ISO 14064-1 international standard. It covered all daily operations at the facility, including stationary and mobile combustion sources, gas leaks, electricity consumption, material and product transportation, employee travel, and supply chain activities. The emission calculations were based on a blend of credible national and international emission factors.

To ensure credibility and impartiality, the results were independently verified by the Environmental Performance Unit at EOS and EGAC, which issued a professional opinion confirming a “reasonable level of assurance” regarding the accuracy of the data.

This milestone sets a benchmark for petrochemical companies in Egypt and the region, as ETHYDCO becomes the first in the sector to implement and document Scope 3 emissions with independent verification. It supports the Ministry’s and the sector’s objectives of reducing emissions and aligning with international standards, laying a scientific foundation for effective future carbon reduction plans.

With this achievement, ETHYDCO reaffirms its strong commitment to environmental responsibility and its strategic direction toward a sustainable future that balances production needs with environmental protection for future generations.
